Young double ends Spurs' title chances

Harry Redknapp’s credentials as a potential England manager are suddenly coming under scrutiny. After a 5-2 thrashing by Arsenal, Tottenham lost 3-1 at home to Manchester United, with 2 goals from Ashley Young and one from Wayne Rooney securing all 3 points for the visitors.

To be fair to Redknapp United were outplayed for much of the game with Tottenham winger Aaron Lennon tormenting them down the right. Typically though they defended resiliently and took their chances when they came, with 3 sharp finishes from the England forwards.

Tottenham were disappointed to have a goal ruled out in the first-half. Emmanuel Adebayor got in the way of a goalbound Louis Saha shot and appeared to use his hand before flicking the ball in. Otherwise the home team failed to take advantage of their superior possession.

"We dominated them, we were better than them," Redknapp said after the game, still nonplussed by the result. "I've never seen Alex on his feet so much, out of the dugout, for years."

The mark of champions is their ability to win without playing well, and United underlined their Premier League experience by claiming the victory. They stay just 2 points behind Manchester City, with the Manchester derby at the end of April now looking like it could be the title decider.
