Woods ruled out of US Open

Them's the brakes for Tiger Woods these days: the former world number one, now ranked a lowly 15, has pulled out of the US Open, siting injuries to his achilles and knee, sustained during this year's Masters at Augusta, as the cause.

Those of you who follow his Twitter feed will already be informed of the star's latest setback: 'Not playing in US Open. Very disappointed. Short-term frustration for long-term gain," he tweeted to his nigh on million followers.

'It's time for me to listen to my doctors and focus on the future,' he continued. 'I was hopeful that I could play but, if I did, I risk further damage to my left leg. My knee and achilles tendon are not fully healed.'

Woods added: 'It's been a frustrating and difficult year but I'm committed to my long-term health. I will be back playing when I can.'
