Cipriani was dramatically dropped by Ashton for England's game against Scotland last week. But Ashton has reversed his decision and handed the Wasps' youngster the number 10 shirt.
Ashton's decision is brave and will hopefully see England adopting a more attacking style. Cipriani has been outstanding for Wasps this year and with any luck he'll be able to inspire England's misfiring midfield and bring Sackey and Vainikolo into the game.
But while Wilkinson was poor against Scotland so too was the service he received from the pack. It will be hard for Cipriani to change things if England's forwards reproduce last Saturday's insipid performance.
In the end Saturday's game is a meaningless tie between two teams that thus far have completely underperformed in the Six Nations. It doesn't spell the end of Wilkinson's England career, and who knows it may even be the kick in the pants that he needs to get his game back.
Sadly for all the neutrals out there Ireland coach Eddie O'Sullivan has resisted the temptation to replace injured skipper Brian O'Driscoll with Ireland's great white hope for the future Luke Fitzgerald.
But can Saturday's game be more boring than England-Scotland? Hopefully the selection of Cipriani over Wilkinson will liven things up a bit.
