West Ham look to sign Benni McCarthy

West Ham have made an official bid for Blackburn Rovers' striker Benni McCarthy according to the player's agent. The Hammers have been linked to the South Africa international ever since Sam Allardyce made it clear that the 32-year-old would be allowed to leave Ewood Park during the current transfer window.

McCarthy has struggled with his form this season scoring only once and spending most of his time on the bench and failed to turn up to the club's last two training sessions: 'We are very disappointed with Benni's non-appearance for training and will deal with it separately should he remain here after the transfer window has closed,' Allardyce told reporters.

'We have said all along that we will listen to offers, but only agree to sell if both the commercial and football reasons satisfy Blackburn Rovers. That situation remains unchanged.'

Gianfranco Zola is hoping to strengthen his squad and new Hammers' owners David Sullivan and David Gold have pledged that they will sign two strikers during the current transfer window. With Carlton Cole, Guillermo Franco and Zavon Hines all out injured Zola has been forced to play 18-year-old striker Frank Nouble.

The Hammers had been linked to Ruud van Nistelrooy, who has since joined Hamburg, and are said to be sniffing around Monaco's Eidur Gudjohnsen and Stoke City's James Beattie.
