Wenger: Schwarzer’s Arsenal move is off

Mark Schwarzer’s dream move from Fulham to Arsenal appears to be off judging from comments made by Arsene Wenger today, however, the Gunners are now being linked with Manchester City’s Shay Given.

Arsenal have made two bids of £2m for Schwarzer but according to the rumour mill the 37-year-old Australian international failed a medical at the Emirates.

Wenger made it clear today that the deal to sign Schwarzer is off but hinted that Arsenal could still sign a new goalkeeper ahead of Tuesday’s transfer window deadline.

‘We are where we are. We have four great keepers and it is important we give confidence to them for the next game,’ he said.

‘I do not rule it out, but at the moment I say I am not in a position to sign anybody. At the moment, it is all dead.’

A number of tabloids and broadsheets have suggested that Wenger could now move for Given who has been relegated to the bench at City due to Joe Hart’s form.

However, Wenger has had a number of chances to sign the Irish international in the past suggesting that he doesn’t believe Given is the player to solve Arsenal’s goalkeeping problems.
