Wenger fumes

Arsene Wenger was fuming yesterday after his Arsenal side concede a penalty to draw 1-1 with Liverpool in the 12th minute of stoppage time, and to all but end their title hopes.

The Gunners had themselves taken the lead eight minutes into time added on, after Fabregas was fouled in the box by Jay Spearing and Robin van Persie tucked home the penalty, but soon after Emmanuel Eboue fouled Lucas Leiva at the other end, and Dirk Kuyt grabbed an equaliser that will cripple Arsenal’s title challenge.

Arsenal are now six points behind Manchester United and only two ahead of third-place Chelsea, and with Tottenham at White Hart Lane coming up next for them, Wenger could see his team fall behind even their stuttering London rivals. Understandably he is upset, especially after Kenny Dalglish telling him to ‘p*** off’.

‘We conceded a penalty after 11 minutes when the referee said there was eight minutes of injury time,’ said Wenger. ‘I don't see where those three minutes came from and it was no penalty.

‘We have been badly done in recent games (at home). Against Sunderland we scored a regular goal and were not given a penalty that was 100%, then today we got caught back like that. It is a period where we have not had the biggest luck, that's for sure.

‘We dropped two points. It was a difficult game against a Liverpool team who basically only defended. We are on a 15-game unbeaten run, but recently we have not taken enough points. Now we must give everything until the last game of the season and see if it is our year or not.’
