Uefa today has confirmed that Wembley Stadium will be the host venue for both semi finals and the final of Euro 2020. The tournament will test a new formula whereby stadiums from 13 European nations will play host to a number of games each rather than the tradition of one host or joint hosts facilitating all the games.

FA Chairman Greg Dyke was a very proud man when he heard the news and said "This bidding process was open to more than 50 Uefa countries so for Wembley to be ultimately recognised in this way is testament to a lot of hard work behind the scenes."

London's Wembley held off a challenge from Munich to host the final but the German city will still get in on the action as it is one of four cities that will each host one quarter final along with Rome, St. Petersburg and Baku in Azerbaijan.

UEFA president Michel Platini emphasised the significance of the new format saying "This is a historic moment because we'll be able to bring this competition to all the countries of Europe and especially to countries that would never otherwise have the chance to host such a competition."

The real beauty of the pan-European hosting format is clear to see for small countries like Ireland and Romania. The Aviva Stadium in Dublin and will get to host 3 group games and a last 16 round in what will mark a huge event for the small nation. Likewise, Bucharest will host the same amount of fixtures as will Brussels, Glasgow, Copenhagen, Amsterdam, Bilbao and Budapest.

This will mark the first big football tournament to take place in the UK since Euro 1996. Ever since the renovation of Wembley, it is now in the top tier of European Stadia in terms of revenue generating potential hence why Wembley has hosted two Champions League finals recently in 2011 and 2013. With a capacity of 90,000 and up to 17,000 corporate seats, Wembley is in prime position to host many more major events in coming years.
