Wayne Rooney's really effing sorry

Anyone who caught Manchester United’s thrilling come-from-behind victory at West Ham on the weekend will surely have seen one of the funniest moments of the season so far; Wayne Rooney celebrating his second goal by staring into the camera like a surly cave-teen and shouting ‘****ing what? ****ing what?’, as though he was about to kick off against a load of wannabe assailants in a park.

Despite being funny, there has been something of a moral panic, with the Daily Mail and other leading the charge. Even former ref Graham Poll suggested that he had somehow ruined Mother’s Day, despite the game being held on Saturday, and not yesterday. Anyway the man himself has apologised, and it now looks like he may escape any sanction from the FA. There’s a shock, eh?

‘I want to apologise for any offence that may have been caused by my goal celebration, especially any parents or children that were watching,’ Rooney said in a statement released by United. ‘Emotions were running high, and on reflection my heat-of-the-moment reaction was inappropriate. It was not aimed at anyone in particular.’
