Aston Villa have called off the transfer of England midfielder Gareth Barry to Liverpool. It had been widely believed that the midlands club were ready to accept a cash-plus-player deal for the 27-year-old.
But Aston Villa appear to have rejected the deal which would have earned them £17.5m as well as the services of right-back Steve Finnan. The Birmingham club released a statement last night which seemed to finally put an end to the saga: 'This evening, Aston Villa can announce that Gareth Barry will be staying with the club following the interest from Liverpool over recent months.'
The Daily Mail, however, claims that the deal is still ongoing and that Villa made their statement following a clerical mix-up which saw Liverpool miss an agreed deadline by twenty-minutes. At this point it really is anyone's guess as to where Barry will eventually end up.
