Venus Williams crashed out of Wimbledon

Venus Williams crashed out of Wimbledon yesterday afternoon after a shock straight sets defeat to Bulgarian Tsvetana Pironkova, who is ranked 80 places below the superstar American, and who has now racked up only the ninth Grand Slam win of her career.

The most shocking thing about match was the manner in which William’s lost; she was hammered by a player who is clearly her inferior 6-2, 6-3, and played so terribly that she couldn’t even bring herself to compliment the victor, who she damned with the faintest of praise.

Even if in truth she was the architect of her own downfall, the post-match quotes (despite the fact they have the ring of truth about them) don’t do Pironkova justice; she was fast and efficient around the court, and capitalised on nearly every one of her mistakes, and fully deserves her shot at her first ever Grand Slam final. She will face Vera Zvonareva in her semi-final.

‘I feel like she played solid,’ said Williams afterwards. ‘But I wasn't overpowered, you know, hit off the court or anything. I just kind of let myself exit. I congratulate her for hanging in there for me to make yet another error. I missed all my shots today, forehand, volley, backhand. You know, if there was a shot to miss, I missed it.’
