United hammer Arsenal to reach Champions League final

Manchester United hammered Arsenal 3-1 at the Emirates last night to reach their second successive Champions League final. Sir Alex Ferguson's side put in a another excellent performance dominating the match from start to finish.

The Gunners needed to start well and there was an air of expectancy amongst the supporters in a capacity Emirates stadium. But Arsene Wenger's team were 2-0 down after 11 minutes with the tie effectively finished.

Park Ji-Sung opened the scoring on eight minutes when he capitalized on a Kieran Gibbs slip to fire past Manuel Almunia. Cristiano Ronaldo made it 2-0 three minutes later with a free-kick which the Spanish keeper should probably have kept out.

The Portugal winger grabbed his second and the goal of the game midway through the second half in a sweeping move which he started with a backheel to Park before sprinting the length of the field to get onto a beautiful through ball from Wayne Rooney.

But the game ended on something of a sour note for United when Darren Fletcher was sent off late on for a tackle on Fabregas despite clearly winning the ball. The unlucky Scot will now miss the final in Rome in three weeks time.

Robin van Persie scored the resulting penalty but at that point the Emirates was half empty as Gunners fans began contemplating yet another trophy less season.
