United could face FA charge over Bellamy coin incident

Manchester United could face an FA charge after Manchester City striker Craig Bellamy was struck with a coin on the head during last night's Carling Cup semi-final.

Bellamy was hit with the coin as he got ready to take a corner early in the second half with supporters also aiming beer bottles in the direction of the Wales international.

United goalkeeper Edwin van der Sar appealed to the home fans to show restraint following the incident and referee Howard Webb called for extra security to be dispatched to that section of Old Trafford.

A spokesperson for United told reporters that the alleged perpetrators had been identified by police and later arrested, however, the club could still be sanctioned.
