United beat Villa 3-2 with last gasp winner
Manchester United beat Aston Villa 3-2 this afternoon thanks to an injury-time winner from 17-year-old débutante Federico Macheda. The Italian striker went from zero to hero in the 92nd minute when he produced a sublime turn on the edge of the box before finishing past Brad Friedel in the Villa goal.
The goal and the result sparked pandemonium on the United bench after it had looked like the Red Devils were set drop at least two points in the title race. Despite going ahead through a Ronaldo free-kick, United were second best to Villa for the majority of the game.
Missing Vidic and Ferdinand, United's back-four had been a disaster all afternoon with former England international Gary Neville enduring a torrid 90 minutes. John Carew and Gabriel Agbonlahor put Martin O'Neill's side ahead in the second half, but it was Ronaldo again who levelled matters with a low left-foot finish 10 minutes from time.
With the sides looking set to share the points and the game running into injury-time, Macheda seized his opportunity with both hands. No matter what happens in the young Italian's footballing future, his goal will go down in United history and could have secured the club's third successive league title.
