United beat Sunderland 2-1

Manchester United beat Sunderland 2-1 this afternoon at the Stadium of Light thanks to another goal from 17-year-old super sub Federico Macheda. Last week's hero in the 3-2 win over Aston Villa again grabbed the headlines scoring with his first touch to earn three vital points.

United had gone ahead in the first half when Paul Scholes ghosted his way into the box unmarked before planting a header past Craig Gordon in the Sunderland goal. Despite the early goal, the Red Devils showed the stuttering form which characterized their performance against Porto midweek.

When Kenwyne Jones equalized for the Black Cats on 55 minutes it looked as if Sir Alex Ferguson's side were going to drop two vital points in the title race. But Macheda came off the bench to prove that he is not just a one trick pony. The teenager expertly diverted a Michael Carrick shot to get his side out of jail for the second time in a week.
