United beat City 2-0 in Manchester derby

Manchester United earned bragging rights over their rivals City this afternoon with an easy 2-0 win in the Manchester derby. The result sees United move three points clear of title contenders Liverpool with a game in hand.

Despite being billed as a potential banana skin for Sir Alex Ferguson's team against a resurgent Manchester City, the result seemed in little doubt following Cristiano Ronaldo's opener on 17 minutes.

The Portugal winger saw his firmly struck free-kick take a slight deflection off Nigel de Jong and fly past Shay Given in the City goal. Carlos Tevez made it 2-0 on the stroke of half time with a brilliant turn and finish from the edge of the box.

Mark Hughes' side struggled to get into the game and failed to test Edwin van der Sar until late in the second half when substitute Martin Petrov brought out the best from the former Dutch international. Ferguson's gamble to rest Michael Carrick and Wayne Rooney paid off as United again underlined that they have the best squad in the Premier League.
