UK weather disrupts the weekend sports fixtures

Terrible weather has got in the way of this weekend’s sporting events with horse racing and football the worse effected sports. The third round of the FA Cup normally throws up a few surprises but it was the weather causing the biggest upset this weekend. Saturday’s fixtures between Charlton and Oxford and Portmouth’s League Two fixture with Accrington were two football matches cancelled due to weather.

Crawley Town’s FA Cup second round replay with Bristol Rovers was also called off. Matt Moss, Crawley Town’s groundsman, tried to get make the pitch playable but was unable to get Broadfield Stadium ready for the kickoff. The clubs will attempt to replay each other on 8th January at 19:45.

Although football clubs are finding the conditions unplayable, the sport wasn’t as badly affected as racing. Sandown’s meeting was postponed due to the heavy rainfall as 9mms fell overnight. "We had no choice to abandon after 5mm of rain in the early part of Friday afternoon and the forecast of more to come," Sandown's clerk of the course Andrew Cooper said.

Wincanton could be another course affected by the weather this weekend. An early inspection is expected before officials decide if today’s meeting can go ahead. Clerk of the course Barry Johnson said: "We've had 13mm of overnight rain, but the track has taken that brilliantly. There's a few more showers forecast today [Friday] and through tonight, but the way the track's taken the rain today I think we'll be fine.”

Plumpton’s Sunday meeting is also provisional as the results of an 11am inspection will determine if the Sussex National and the other races at the meeting go ahead. Organises are pretty pessimistic about their chances as heavy rains are forecast tonight. Mark Cornford, clerk of the course, said: “I've been optimistic throughout the week, but the rain is slowly defeating us a little.”

So far this year, a Pro 12 rugby match between Glasgow Warriors and Edinburgh has been postponed and several football matches have been put back. Let’s hope that some of the mouthwatering ties we’ve been looking forward to this weekend like Arsenal v Spurs in the FA Cup aren’t affected.
