Uefa reject Fletcher red-card appeal

Manchester United midfielder Darren Fletcher will miss the Champions League final in Rome on May 27 after Uefa rejected the club's appeal to have his semi-final red-card rescinded.

The Scottish international received a straight red for a foul on Arsenal captain Cesc Fabregas despite replays confirming that Fletcher got the ball.

Barcelona's appeal to have Eric Abidal's sending off against Chelsea overturned also proved unsuccessful with Uefa ruling that there was no valid reason to question the referee's decision.

Uefa's official statement regarding both appeals made this point clear: "Even if they had been admitted they would have been rejected as unfounded as there were no grounds for contesting the referees' original decisions."
