Transfer window madness

Last night saw the closing of the transfer window, and clubs all over the Europe rushing around to do deals. It was a pretty busy night in England as well, as some big names made some big moves.

Despite the obvious animosity between the two clubs, Liverpool and Chelsea appear to like doing business; the Blues have snapped up midfielder Raul Meireles for a reported £15million, bolstering a midfield that has felt stale and old for a couple of seasons now. You'd think after Fernando Torres, Joe Cole and Nigel Spackman that the two clubs would have learned by now – but no.

However the biggest movers were probably Arsenal, who signed Yossi Benayoun on a season-long loan deal, Mikel Arteta from Everton for £10million and crucially, Per Mertesacker from Werder Bremen. Getting their hands on a man who has played 75 times for Germany, and who can actually defend, will be most handy.

'Mikel indicated to me that he wished to join Arsenal,' said Everton manager David Moyes. 'I am very disappointed to lose him but the prospect of Champions League football was something I wasn't able to offer him.'
