Transfer news: Manchester United spending spree will continue next week

News that Manchester United are targeting five more players in the January transfer window will come as no surprise to anyone who’s watched them perform in this season’s Premier League. If the reports are true, then this will be the biggest change in personnel in nearly 20 years. United need fullbacks on both sides of the pitch, another two midfielders to anchor the side and a top rated striker.

The Reds are considering moves for Toni Kroos and Mario Mandzukic from Bayern Munich, Paul Pogba and Arturo Vidal of Juventus are also in the frame for a January transfer, as is Fredy Guarin from Inter Milan. Fernando Reges of FC Porto and Borussia Dortmund’s Marco Reus are also under consideration. Glen Johnson is the only current Premier League player that Manchester United are evaluating at the moment.

The Old Trafford club’s playing staff are ageing so we’re not surprised that new recruits are needed, but panic buying so many players in January is unwise and will prove very expensive for Moyes. Players like Patrice Evra, Alex Buttner, Nani and Rafael are all expected to leave in the summer so are up for sale now, but Moyes will also listen to offers for Ashley Young who we expect will make £10million for the club, and Wilfried Zaha, the former Crystal Palace man who hasn’t made an impact this season after his £15million move in the summer.

The catalyst for the additional spending has to be the arrival of Juan Mata from Chelsea. The former Stamford Bridge player should make a massive impact over the second half of this season. As he was underutilised at Chelsea, he should be motivated to do well for his new club. We’re not sure whether overhauling a side in January will have a positive impact on the club’s results as anyone Moyes brings in will take time to gel with the existing players but we can’t see if doing any harm to the struggling side’s results.
