Transfer news: Juan Mata could join Manchester United this month

Under fire manager David Moyes will use the financial power of his new club this month to improve the struggling side’s results. Manchester United will need proven talent if they are to challenge for the Premier League title so a bid for out of favour Chelsea midfielder Juan Mata is expected.

January transfer window deals tend to be inflated so we’re expecting the Spanish international’s transfer to cost United something like £30 million. If Mata does make the deal he will join a struggling side lacking creativity. He would be a perfect fit for United who are currently 7th in the Premier League and competing in three competitions (Premier League, Capital One Cup and Champions League) following an early exit in the FA Cup.

Jose Mourinho will have the ultimate say over whether the playmaker stays or goes but as Chelsea are using Mata as a reserve for Oscar, we can’t see the 25 year old staying at the club. Chelsea’s boss has been vocal about wanting to bring Wayne Rooney to Stamford Bridge. In the summer Man United refused to sell the striker but there could be a deal involving the England international who remains unsettled at United even though he is playing for the reds.

Chelsea currently has the maximum number of non-homegrown over 21-year old players (17) and as Mata is one they don’t have any room to play with at the moment. If Mata’s sale doesn’t go through, a loan deal with Atletico Madrid could be the midfielder’s only way out of Mourinho’s side. If the playmaker remains at Chelsea he will play for the blues as the club are competing on three fronts at the moment. Their busy schedule also means that they would need a replacement for the player if he leaves this month.
