Toughen up

David Moyes has said that he needs to ‘toughen up’ on his players after Everton slumped to a insipid 2-0 defeat at Bolton Wanderers yesterday afternoon.

Moyes was rightly furious at how poor his Everton charges were yesterday, barely creating anything resembling a decent goalscoring opportunity, and being easily dispatched by a Bolton side that Owen Coyle has got playing some decent football. The signing on loan of Chelsea striker Daniel Sturridge has bolstered the Whites’ attack, as he has scored three goals in as many games. While Bolton are heading in the right direction, Everton can’t seem to get away from the relegation scrap.

‘We did not perform,’ he said. ‘Players who have been performing well all season probably had their poorest game. Maybe I have gone a bit soft on them. Perhaps I need to toughen up on them.

‘We also didn't compete hard enough. The toughness we have had I didn't think was there and it was required. We have been built on that quality.Obviously it means that the manager didn't pick the right ones or select the right formation but you can't take away that Bolton showed a bit more endeavour and won the big challenges in the game which were required.

‘To a man not one of them stood up and was counted today, we were really below the standards we set.’
