1. Bill McLaren: Rugby
The voice of rugby. His rolling r's and Scottish lilt lit up fifty
years of rugby on the box. It hasn't been the same sport since he retired in
2002. The highlight of his commentary was Scotland's 1990 Grand Slam
win. Listen to the Billmeister in full flow here.
2. John Motson: Football
A national institution. Known for his pedantic knowledge of the game and sheepskin jacket, Motty has come up with some classic quotes over the years:
"Nearly all the Brazilian supporters are wearing yellow shirts - it's a fabulous kaleidoscope of colour"
"It looks like a one man show here, although there are two men involved"
We've chosen Motty's classic commentary of England's 5-1 victory over Germany.
3. Ted Lowe: Snooker
Whispering Ted Lowe. His hushed voice and dulcet tones lit up late nights watching Snooker on the Beeb. Memorable quotes include:
“He's going for the pink, and for those of you with black-and-white sets, the yellow is behind the blue.”
Check out his commentary on the 1980 Embassy World Championship between Alex Higgins and Steve Davis here!
4. Brian Johnston: Cricket
Johnners was the voice of Cricket for over fifty years. The Telegraph called him 'the greatest natural broadcaster of them all'. He was a master at using terrible puns. So he's a favourite with us! Some memorable quotes include:
“The bowler's Holding, the batsman's Willey”
“You've come over at a very appropriate time; Ray Illingworth has just relieved himself at the pavilion end.”
The archetype of the classic English gentleman of a by-gone era, Johnners is widely remebered for the "leg-over" incident.
5. Eddie Moroney: Gaelic football
Eddie who? Eddie's commentary on the world famous Aherlow vs. Nenagh in the Tipperary U21 county final, 1992, needs to be heard by all humanity. His Bismarckian gift of diplomacy knows no bounds and could heal all the ills of the Western world. In short, the man is a genius. Notable quotes include:
“Oh mother of God!”

Finally, we couldn't leave out Alan Partridge's World Cup Countdown to 94. "Eat my goal!" Legend.
