Get your hands on tickets for England football internationals

Wembley's new arch soars impressively over north London. Football fans flock there loyally for every international, making tickets for England football matches occasionally hard to come by. The application process can be a little tortuous. We tried our luck.

Your first point of call is the English FA (www.FA.com) which will have details of upcoming fixtures. To buy tickets you will need an FA Number (FAN) and password, which you can get by filling in a form with your personal details.

You will notice that priority is given to englandfans, the official supporters' club members. Silver membership for £25 gives priority for match tickets, discounted deals on seats for home Wembley internationals, and a 15% discount at the official England store. Gold membership at £37.50 offers all these benefits plus the exclusive opportunity to buy tickets for away matches.

If you have your englandfans membership, you can buy tickets as soon as they become available. Public issue tickets go on sale a week later, meaning that, for major internationals, these may be very limited.

In a nice, if unintentional, touch the FA's buy button puts you in a queue, recreating the old-fashioned experience of waiting in line at a ticket office impatiently counting the people in front of you and wondering if there will be any tickets left by the time it is your turn.

If you want to sidestep the FA process you should be able to find tickets for England football matches at some of the online ticket specialists like www.ticketmaster.co.uk or www.livefootballtickets.com, but don't be too surprised if there's a mark-up on the seat price.
