The US open tennis grand slam

It's only a few weeks to go until the us open tennis tournament commences and the players preparation is continuing in the Western and Southern open in Cincinatti.

There was a replay of the 2009 us open final as Roger Federer took on Argentinian hard hitter Juan Martin del Potro and the former number one in the world Federer avenged his defeat of 2009 with a comfortable 6-3 7-5 victory over del Potro.

British number one Andy Murray has progressed to the quarter-finals where he will take on world number 10 Gilles Simon in Cincinnati. Murray will be desperately looking to go one further than his previous exploits in this tournament which has seen him finish as runner up in 2008 after falling to defeat against Roger Federer. In previous years Murray hasn't fared too well with the last two years seeing him not progress past the third round of the competition. A win in Cincinatti will see the Scot take on either Rafael Nadal or highly rated USA player Mardy Fish in the semi-finals.

In the Women's draw Serena Williams was forced to withdraw after suffering an injury to her toe whilst world number one Caroline Wozniacki was surprisingly beaten by wild card Christina McHale from the USA.

All eyes will soon turn to Flushing Meadows where the competitors will begin in their quest to reign victorious and lift the US Open trophy. Early favourites in the men's draw are unsurprisingly Novac Djokovic and Nadal with Murray rated with an outside chance of securing his first ever major.
