The Theatre of Dreams: David Beckham the Musical
Just when you thought it was safe to go back into the theatre, news has been released of a forthcoming musical based on the life of David Beckham. According Mark Archer, the man behind the project, 'David Beckham - The Theatre of Dreams' is "a modern-day fairytale of heroes, villains, love, Manchester United and what it means to lead your country". Okay.
Although not being billed as a comedy, the details of the musical celebration of all 33-years of Goldenballs' existence sound hilarious. Take for instance the flying boot which transports Becks out of Old Trafford and towards Madrid. Some of the excerpts from the lyrics also raise a chuckle:'Talk about football coming home, And then one night in Rome, We were strong, we had grown, And now I see Ince ready for war, Gazza good as before, Shearer certain to score, And Psycho screaming.'
Unfortunately, unlike I Keano, the comedy musical based on the spat between Roy Keane and Mick McCarthy, 'The Theatre of Dreams' seems to take itself just a tad too seriously. Archer describes Beck's rise to fame as an "aspirational fable". But despite the reservations, Beckham the Musical could turn into something of a cash cow for its creator. Provided that old Goldenballs decides to give the project the green light that is.
