The Lions earn bruising 20-8 victory over the Southern Kings

The British and Irish Lions won a bruising encounter against the Southern Kings 20-8 at Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium this afternoon. Despite picking up their sixth straight victory in a row the Lions were left with an ever increasing injury list after both James Hook and Euan Murray were forced to leave the field.

The game was punctuated by a number of off the ball hits and late tackles from an ill-disciplined Southern Kings side with Jaco van der Westhuyzen receiving a yellow card for a high tackle on Riki Flutey after just 19 minutes. The Lions, however, managed to keep their discipline and responded on the scoreboard.

The tourists' pack turned the screw on their opponents with Ronan O'Gara, on in place of the injured Hook, dictating proceedings with the boot. Ugo Monye put the Lions further in front with a try that should all but cement his place on the Test side and the tourists were later awarded a penalty try which all but made sure of the win.

All attention will now turn to the first Test against the Springboks on Saturday. South Africa coach Peter de Villiers has already named his starting XV while the Lions brain trust will wait until Thursday before naming the fifteen players who will be hoping to topple the world champions in their own backyard.
