The English are nationalists

It was a somewhat mixed night for the English clubs competing in the Europa League last night, with Liverpool fighting back to win at home against Napoli and Manchester City slumping to a somewhat embarrassing defeat in Poland.

The Reds beat Napoli 3-1 at Anfield, thanks entirely to hat-trick hero Steven Gerrard, who pulled his team back from a 1-0 deficit in 15 minutes to secure them the three points. City meanwhile were a shambles against Lech Poznan, and added fuel to the rumours that Roberto Mancini has lost the dressing room and that he will soon be sacked. Rumours that he claims have only popped up because he is Italian.

‘The tabloids rage against us because City are headed by an Italian,' he said to Italian newspaper Il Secolo XIX. 'I'm sorry to say, but the English are nationalists in football. City are fourth in the standings, and were in second place. The club have asked me to qualify for next season's Champions League and we are going well for that.

‘Why should I worry about being fired? This does not exist. The team are against me? Lies, all rubbish. There were hard discussions with some players, but the team follows me and the results are arriving.’
