'Surprised'

Manchester City capitalised on their rivals failing yesterday, by giving Sunderland a thorough going over at Eastlands.

The Sky Blues beat Sunderland 5-0 in a convincing display of firepower, and looked like they were aiming a claim for second place. With Chelsea, Arsenal, Liverpool and Tottenham all dropping points City moved to only three points behind the Gunners, although they do have a game in hand.

City manager Roberto Mancini was happy with his team’s display, which came after criticism for they way have performed this season, especially in big games.

‘I am surprised but I am happy,’ he said. ‘It is important that we scored five goals,’ said Mancini. ‘We always play to win. If we continue like this we'll finish very well.

It was important for us to win this game because we had the chance to go into third position. Before the game I thought it would be difficult because it is not easy to beat Sunderland. They are a strong team who work very well and their manager knows everything. But we started the game brightly and that was important.

‘It is possible that it will give us confidence for our remaining games. It is important now that we continue and go to Liverpool and win next Monday.’
