Sunderland make Gibson bid

Sunderland are reported to have made a bid for Manchester United’s Darron Gibson as they look to replace midfielder Jordan Henderson who has joined Liverpool in a deal said to be worth £20 million.

The Black Cats are reported to have offered £12 million for Gibson, Wes Brown and John O’Shea as they look to reinforce their squad.

Gibson, 23, has struggled to establish himself as first-team player at United but dismissed suggestions from his international manager, Giovanni Trapattoni, earlier this year that he should leave Old Trafford to develop as a player.

Sunderland chairman Niall Quinn moved quickly to reassure the club’s fans that the money received from youth-academy product Henderson will be reinvested in new players.

‘We know the areas that need strengthening and the type of player we need in order to progress, and the job of bringing those players to the club is continuing at a pace,’ Quinn told reporters earlier today.
