Sunderland 1 Bolton Wanderers 0

Sunderland have moved up to sixth place in the Premier League following their 1-0 win over Bolton Wanderers at the Stadium of Light this afternoon.

Danny Welbeck scored the game’s only goal on 32 minutes when he headed home the rebound from close range after Jussi Jaaskelainen had parried a Darren Bent shot.

Bolton came close to levelling through Zak Knight on the stroker of half time, but Craig Gordon made a stunning point-blank save to deny the centre-back.

Bolo Zenden should have put Sunderland 2-0 up just seconds before the final whistle, but the veteran midfielder headed a Jordan Henderson cross wide of the Bolton goal.

However, Owen Coyle’s team will feel unlucky not to have earned a point considering the amount of goal-scoring chances they spurned.

Gary Cahill saw his goal-bound effort blocked by Anton Ferdinand while Ivan Klasnic was guilty of a glaring miss in stoppage time which would secured a draw.

‘I felt we had chances throughout the game. The way we came out (in the) second half we put Sunderland under pressure for the last 25 minutes’, Coyle said after the game.

The Bolton manager continued: ‘I'm not claiming we deserved to win but I don't think we deserved to lose the game.’
