Sunderland 1 Arsenal 0

Sunderland pulled off the shock win of the day when they beat Arsenal 1-0 at the Stadium of Light. Darren Bent, so disappointing for England in their match against Brazil last weekend, was the hero on the day when he fired past Manuel Almunia from close range on 71 minutes.

Although they dominated possession throughout, Arsenal's lack of thrust upfront underlined just how much they will miss the injured Robin van Persie. Eduardo started in the Dutchman's place and despite going close with a beautifully weighted chip the Croatia international struggled to make an impression.

The Gunners were unlucky not to be awarded a penalty when Fraizer Campbell appeared to take down Carlos Vela just inside the Sunderland area, however, Arsene Wenger was uncharacteristically critical of his players following the final whistle.

'We can only fault ourselves. Some players were not at their best and we gave a goal away at a set piece that provided Sunderland's only opportunity to score. That sums it up perfectly; the game was there for the taking.'
