Suarez hat-trick keeps Liverpool flying high

Liverpool's stubbornness in retaining Luis Suarez’s services now looks like the smartest business they did all summer. Suarez was unstoppable against West Bromwich Albion, scoring three of Liverpool’s goals in a 4-1 win. His strike partnership with Daniel Sturridge is currently the most potent in the Premier League.

Suarez’s goals underlined his all-round ability. The first was classic Suarez, a trick to beat a defender and a low shot into the net. The second was remarkable, a powerful and accurate header from outside the penalty area. The third was a precise flicked header. Remarkably they were all outshone by Sturridge’s goal, a precision chip that eluded the goalkeeper’s fingertips.

Manager Brendan Rodgers praised Suarez for showing his passion for the team. "I knew once I got the commitment from him in the summer he wasn't going to walk out," Rodgers said. "He's been great from then on. It was a difficult summer for him but it was for everyone. But we managed it as a club and he managed himself well and he has come out of the other side and he is performing as he does, to a very high level."

The win kept Liverpool in second place in the Premier League behind Arsenal, and Rodgers described it as Liverpool’s best performance of the season. "West Brom are a very good side," he said. “They went to Old Trafford and won, so for us to score four goals - and we could have had a few more - it was an outstanding team performance."

If the attack is looking formidable, Rodgers is still looking for his best defensive combination. It’s possible Liverpool may move to strengthen that part of the team in January. In the meantime, the most succinct and accurate description of Suarez’s performance came from the Liverpool owner John W Henry who tweeted: "Luis. Magician".
