Stoke earn shock win over Spurs

Stoke City earned a shock victory 1-0 over Spurs this afternoon at White Hart Lane almost a year to the day since Harry Redknapp took over at the North London side.

Substitute Glenn Whelan repeated his heroics for Ireland against Italy a couple of weeks ago with a brilliant right foot finish in the 86th minute to earn The Potters a valuable three points away from home.

Tottenham dominated the game with Peter Crouch going close a couple of occasions while Niko Kranjcar hit the post in the second half, but Redknapp's team ultimately failed to break down a dogged Stoke side with keeper Steve Simonsen pulling off a string of excellent saves.

Stoke's reserve keeper only found himself in the first team after Thomas Sorenson picked up an injury just before kickoff. However, the former Everton player made a vital contribution on the day ensuring that his team were still in the game when Whelan produced a moment of magic four minutes from the end.
