Stoke City beat Hadjuk Split

Stoke City are only one tie from the Europa League football after they easily kept Hajduk Split at bay at there own ground, capping off a fine disply with a late goal to seal the tie.

City took a 1-0 lead to the Balkans, and had to weather an early storm as the hosts came straight on the offensive, hoping that an attacking onslaught, combined with the intimidating atmosphere created by their fans would cause the Potters to buckle. However they held firm and soon took control of the game, frustrating the fans, and in stoopage put the seal on a fine display when Ryan Shotton bundled in Dean Whitehead's cross.

'I'm very proud of the players and for the football club,' said Stoke manager Tony Pulis. 'The chairman (Peter Coates) has his family out here today. They will be absolutely delighted and I am very pleased for them.

'The important thing was to make sure that we came here full of confidence. This is the first time the club has played a European tie and actually qualified or gone through, so it's another new bridge we have crossed.'
