Steve McSacken

After a brief renaissance, in which he took unfancied FC Twente to their first ever Dutch league title, Steve McCLaren is back on the scrap heap after being sacked by German club Wolfsburg.

The former England manager, who was also the first Englishman to manage in Germany, was relieved of his duties after the club picked up only five wins in 21 games, leaving the 2009 champions perilously close to relegation from to the second division of the Bundesliga.

‘We were not convinced that we could have any stability working with Steve McClaren as manager until the end of the season,’ said the club’s general manager, Dieter Hoeness. ‘We tried as long as we could but unfortunately we have now lost our belief [in him].

‘We cannot underestimate how serious our position is in the table. We are alarmed at being only a point above the relegation places, so now it is a case of trying to increase the gap between us and the cut-off as soon as possible.’
