Steve Bruce confirmed as Sunderland manager

Steve Bruce has been confirmed as Sunderland manager after signing a three-year contract to takeover at the North East club. The deal is said to be worth £60,000 per week while Wigan will receive approximately £3m in compensation.

Sunderland chairman Niall Quinn spoke about Bruce's appointment: "Steve will bring a professionalism and strength of character to this club that will really help to bring us forward to where we all want to be."

The former Ireland striker continued: "He knows more than anyone what football means to people of this region and I'm confident that he will be able to instill into our players exactly what it means to play for this football club."

According to the Guardian, Bruce could be given up to £60m to spend on new players over the summer which will make happy reading for Sunderland fans. In contrast, Wigan boss Dave Whelan said that he was devastated by the news of Bruce's departure, but has wasted little time in lining up Swansea manager Roberto Martínez as a possible replacement.
