Spurs target Madrid reject van der Vaart

Spurs are reported to be considering a January move for Real Madrid midfielder Rafael van der Vaart. The Holland midfielder has struggled to hold down a first-team place at the Bernabeu and his World Cup place could be under threat.

Van der Vaart has played just 15 minutes of football for the La Liga side this season and as a result has been left out of the Holland squad for their friendly with Australia in Sydney on October 10. Both Spurs and Everton were linked with the former Ajax player in the summer after he was told that he was surplus to requirements at Real.

However, van der Vaart remained at Madrid and now looks likely to leave in January with Los Blancos manager Manuel Pellegrini leaving the Dutch playmaker on the bench in order to accommodate Kaka and Cristiano Ronaldo. Van der Vaart could prove an able substitute for the injured Luka Modric.
