Sol Campbell linked with Newcastle switch

Former England defender Sol Campbell has admitted that he would be "very interested" in joining Newcastle United.

The 35-year-old centre-back left League Two side Notts County last month after just one game and will become a free agent once the two parties come to an agreement over releasing the player from his contract.

Campbell has been linked with a host of clubs in recent weeks including West Bromwich Albion, FC Basel, Juventus and now Newcastle United.

Despite a number of offers from Premier League clubs rumoured to be on the table, the former Spurs and Arsenal player told ESPN Soccernet that he would be interested in the challenge of helping the Magpies secure promotion.

"I have been approached by several clubs, and yes, it is correct to say that Newcastle are one of them," Campbell told Soccernet. "People might be surprised to hear me say that I would be very interested in a move there, but I have my reasons."

The player continued: "Also, Newcastle are a big club and could be heading back to the Premier League. It appeals." Campbell has gone to the PFA (players' union) as he looks to get out of his contract with Notts County and is said to be considering appealing to an FA tribunal to resolve the matter.
