Snooker loopy nuts are we

You may have been distracted by the weekend's festival of FA Cup football, but the Snooker World Championship started on Saturday, and what a feast of baize action we've had so far.

Mark Williams crashed out to seven-times world champ Steven Hendry in the pick of the first round matches, in a contest that saw Williams take a 5-4 lead, have continuous problems with his cue, extend his lead further to 7-5 and then blow it. Hendry came back from the interval the stronger player and won the last five frames to take move into the second round 10-7.

'Tonight I came out and I didn't feel confident, I didn't truly believe I could win,' said the Scot. 'But something is inside me that doesn't allow myself to give up and it just came to the fore, I just kept plugging away.'

Elsewhere, 2006 champ Graeme Dott beat Barry Hawkins 10-8, Ali Carter beat Gerard Greene 10-5 and Ronnie O'Sullivan thumped Stuart Bingham 10-5. Isn't he dreamy?
