Shock of the tournament

In what must be the shock of the tournament so far, world number two Venus Williams has been beaten at the French Open by Russian Nadia Petrova in straight sets, 6-3,6-4.

It’s the first time the tournament’s 19th seed has ever beaten the American, who was a strong favourite in the eyes of many to win at Roland Garros this year, but a combination of determination, slick winners (28 of them) and a below-par performance from Williams meant that Petrova will be playing her compatriot Elena Dementieva in the quarter finals.

Dementieva herself came through a titanic two-day match against Frenchwoman Aravane Rezai in front of a partisan crowd, eventually winning 6-7 (2/7) 6-4 10-8, saving three match points in the progress.
