Serena Williams disqualified from US Open

Serena Williams was disqualified from the US Open last night after being penalized on match point for abusing an official who had flagged her for a foot fault.

The match was in the second set with Williams 5-6, 15-30 down on her second serve when a line judge called her for a foot fault. The double fault ruling saw Serena lose her rag and then vent her frustration at the official.

The younger Williams sister was seen shaking her racket towards the diminutive line judge before shouting: 'If I could, I would take this ... ball and shove it down your ... throat.'

Williams had already received a warning when she broke her racket in anger after losing the first set. The ruling by tournament referee Brian Earley handed the unseeded Kim Clijsters a place in the US Open final.
