Serena poised for comeback

It's been nearly a year since Serena William has graced the courts, but the four-time Wimbledon champion is set to make a return to the WTA Tour in Eastbourne next week.

The 29-year-old has not played since badly cutting her foot after standing on glass in a German restaurant shortly after winning Wimbledon last year.

The American had two operations on the injury, and has also had treatment for a blood clot in her lung.

After returning to training in April, Williams hopes that the Eastbourne tournamnent will give her enough preparation to defend her Wimbledon title later this month.

'I am so excited to be healthy enough to compete again,' she said. 'These past 12 months have been extremely tough and character-building. I have so much to be grateful for. I'm thankful to my family, friends and fans for all of their support. Serena's back!'

Hurrah for that!
