Schmeichel: van der Sar is still United's best goalkeeper

Peter Schmeichel has dismissed Ben Foster's chances of ousting Edwin van der Sar as Manchester United's first choice goalkeeper in the wake of the young England hopeful's string of howlers during last Sunday's Manchester derby.

Foster was at fault for two of City's three goals being caught in possession by Carlos Tevez for Gareth Barry's equalizer and was also at fault with his positioning for Craig Bellamy's 90th-minute strike.

Schmeichel, arguably United's best goalkeeper of all time, has backed Foster to develop into a top class keeper, but insists that van der Sar is still the best net minder at the club and will be back in the first team as soon as he returns from his broken finger.

"He's getting a good run of games now but I'm sure Edwin will be back in when he's fit because the manager knows he's the right guy for the team at the moment," the Dane said. "Ben will have to make the most of his chances but what he has done so far has been promising."

Van der Sar has been out of action since breaking a finger in his left hand during a pre-season friendly against Bayern Munich but he is expected to be fit for the clash with Bolton Wanderers on 17 October.
