Sam Stosur wins US Open

The US Open saw one of its biggest shocks last night night, as Australian Sam Stosur beat runaway favourite Serena Williams in the final of the US Open.

Stosur's surprise 6-2, 6-3 straight sets victory saw her win her first ever Grand Slam title, and she only took an hour and 13 minutes to dismantle the American. To make the victory even more impressive, it was only her second Grand Slam final, while Williams, three-time Flushing Meadows champion, has won 13 major titles.

The match wasn't without controversy however: Williams was given a code violation early in the second set after a letting rip at umpire Eva Asderaki. A point had been awarded to Stosur after the umpire viewed William's cry of 'come on' to have come before the Aussie had the chance to get the ball back, and when Williams won the next point she blasted Asderaki, saying that she was 'unattractive' inside, as some other choice epithets. However none of which changes the fact that Stosur ran out the deserved winner.

'I had one of my best days and I'm very fortunate that I had it on this stage in New York,' said Stosur. 'Ever since I started playing it was a dream of mine to be here one day. I don't really know what to say. Serena, you are a fantastic player, great champion and have done wonders for our sport.'
