Ryan with rage

It seems that it’s not only Kenny Daglish that was outraged by Howard Webb’s decision to give Manchester United a first minute penalty yesterday: Liverpool player Ryan Babel may be subject of disciplinary action from the FA after posting a pic of Webb in a United shirt on Twitter and lambasting his performance.

‘And they call him one of the best referees?’ he asked, rhetorically. ‘That's a joke. SMH.’ SMH means ‘shaking my head’, something which the FA are no doubt doing right now. Babel was later forced (we presume) into a climbdown, and apologised for his comments. ‘Sorry Howard Webb. My apology if they take my posted pic seriously. This is just an emotional reaction after losing an important game.’

However Paul Daglish, son of Kenny, was less conciliatory towards the referee, explicitly suggesting that he is in United’s pocket. ‘Howard Webb MBE,’ he wrote. ‘Manc of the Busby Era. I am not normally bitter, as you know, but it is different rules against them.’ Later he added: ‘Fergie has his puppet Howard Webb on a piece of string.’ What with this and the abuse he got for his World Cup final performance, Webb’s not having a great time of it, is he?
