Ireland flanker Stephen Ferris has become the latest player to be ruled out of the British and Irish Lions tour of South Africa through injury and will be replaced by Wales captain Ryan Jones.
Ferris had been one of the better performers on the tour to date but a knee ligament injury picked up in training will see the Ulster back row player out of action for up to six weeks. The news will come as a blow for the Lions management team with Ferris widely expected to make the Test team.
But the Ireland player's bad luck has opened the door for Jones who will be hoping to end a disappointing season on a high. The Welsh captain was a late replacement to the Lions squad in 2005 and was one of just a handful of players to come back from New Zealand with his reputation enhanced.
Ian McGeechan spoke about the decision to call Jones up: "Ryan is on the stand-by reserve list and has been playing for Wales over the last few weeks in the USA and Canada."
The Lions head coach continued: "He will fit right in as he knows a lot of the players and he was a Lions replacement on the 2005 tour to New Zealand."
