Challenge cup rugby results today

The Rugby results today included Leeds Rhino's narrowly overcoming a resilient Castleford side in extra time after the final score over 80 minutes finished 8-8. With a Wembley final at stake, both teams were desperate for the win and it proved as they both cancelled each other out on numerous occasions which was reflected in the final score before extra-time. The game may not have been prolific in points, but certainly didn't lack desire nor bravery from both sides. But obviously there are no draws in cup Rugby and after Castleford Tigers player Chase missed a drop goal attempt to send his team to the final, it meant the game progressed into sudden death extra time to determine which of the two great teams would progress.

Sudden death extra time is a grueling test of both mind and body and it seemed that Castleford Tigers player Ryan McGoldrick lost his cool as his high tackle gave Leeds Rhino's the perfect opportunity to win the game. The ever reliable Kevin Sinfield perfectly converted and ensured their place in the Challenge Cup final for the second consecutive year. Defeat was harsh on the Tiger's who were narrowly defeated in a game neither team really deserved to lose.

In the other semi-final, Wigan Warriors secured their place in the final with an excellent 18-12 victory over St Helens to book their place at Wembley. A crowd of nearly 13,000 saw Wigan survive a late onslaught from St Helens who desperately fought to keep their chances in the game alive. But Wigan weren't to be denied a win after tries from Carmont, Charnley and S.Tomkins ensured that the lead was too great for St Helens to chase. This will be the first time Wigan have been in a Challenge cup final since 2004 and they will be hoping to make the long wait worth while where they will battle it out with Leeds Rhino's in the hope of being crowned Challenge Cup winners for 2011.
