Roy Hodgson impressed by Baggies display

Reigning Premier League Champions Manchester United got their title defence off to a good start yesterday, beating West Bromich Albion 2-1 in a enthralling game of football. Both sides went out and attacked, and the Baggies can even count themselves unlucky to lose after an extremely positive display.

United took the three points after Ashley Young scored with a deflected shot ten minutes from time, but they were far from comfortable, especially given that new goalkeeper De Geas had yet another shaky day, letting Shane Long's tame shot squirm under his body and generally looking ropey when crosses came flying in. Baggies boss Roy Hodgson was encouraged by his side's display.

'It was close,' he said. 'Our performance was very good, and we're sad not to hold on but very pleased with our team's performance. We played ourselves into the game and deserved a result for long periods of the game, but unfortunately Young got that bit of luck and that changed the complexion of things.

'We knew it was going to be tough, but we kept our end up well and consider ourselves a little bit unlucky not to get something from the game. We gave United a good run for their money.'
