Rooney to miss start of season with virus
Manchester United will have to plan without Wayne Rooney for the start of the season after the England striker picked up a virus on the Premier League champions' pre-season tour of Africa. The 22-year-old has been unable to train since returning to England last week and will miss Sunday's Community Shield.
United may now look to strengthen their forward line ahead of the start of the season. The club has been linked to Spurs' hitman Dimitar Berbatov, but is also looking to secure a work permit for Angolan striker Manucho.
The Cristiano Ronaldo to Real Madrid transfer saga also looks to have finally come to an end. Alex Ferguson told Sky that the Portuguese winger will be staying at Old Trafford: 'The matter is closed now. He is a Manchester United player - it's finished. He'll be playing here next season, believe me. It's finished.'
Real Madrid unveiled Dutch midfielder Rafael van der Vaart yesterday and club president Ramon Calderon seemed to confirm Ferguson's claim that any deal for Ronaldo was off:'Rafael van der Vaart is the first and possibly the only signing of the summer for Real Madrid. We believe that this squad is full of quality, and plenty of talent.'
