Rooney should be fit in time for World Cup

Wayne Rooney should be fit in time for the World Cup next month despite limping off during Manchester United’s 4-0 win over Stoke City at Old Trafford yesterday afternoon.

The England striker suffered a recurrence of the groin problem which has hampered him since United were knocked out of the Champions League by Bayern Munich last month.

With Fabio Capello set to name a provisional 30-man England squad for South Africa tomorrow thankfully United assistant manager Mike Phelan confirmed that Rooney should be fit and healthy.

'He should be okay,' Phelan told reporters. 'All the phone calls and all the worries we can dispel straight away. He should be fine. It is just a precaution and he will be looking forward to his World Cup.'

Rooney’s injury capped off a disappointing afternoon at Old Trafford with United hammering Stoke but falling short in their title challenge due to Chelsea’s 8-0 win over Wigan at Stamford Bridge.

Sir Alex Ferguson paid tribute to Carlo Ancelotti’s achievement of winning the Premier League in his first attempt: 'I am not going to agonise about where it went wrong. We applaud Chelsea winning the title and I applaud Carlo Ancelotti. We know how hard it is to win the league.'
